Last Sail in Mandurah
27 November 2006
The family is leaving Mandurah for Darwin so Salimony is on the market and I must find another yacht in Darwin. Work commitments will not allow the time to sail north. I had my last sail with the club, here is Salimony heading down to the bottom mark, no spinnaker as I had no crew for the day.
Sailing Open Day
06 November 2006
The 2006-2007 sailing season has started in Mandurah, with the opening ceremony over the yachts hit the water. Salimony was going to participate in the jam race, I was solo again. I headed out with a nice easterly blowing but with 1 minute to go before our start a squall came across the bay sending the wind up above 30 knots with at least one gust reaching 39 knots. Not the kind of wind you want on the start line. The race was cancelled and the sailors were happy to resume tactics at the bar, did someone say free beer. On the boat side, I have finished wiring up a new navigation area, the switch panel swings out to make the fuse rail easily accessible, all the cable looming took me two days but behind the console is all neatly supported and labeled.
Return to Rottnest
08 October 2006
With summer on the way we decided to give Rottnest Island an early visit for the season. This time last year we took a battering over there, this year we had excellent weather and a great five days on Perth's island getaway. Because of the probability of northerly winds this time of the year we settled down in Thomson Bay. During the day the boys went exploring with our friends from Traffic Jam, a small amount of swimming at their newly proclaimed Three Boys Bay, and generally causing mayhem amongst the local crab population, no killing, just annoying the hell out of them. The sail there was with a following SE breeze of about 12 knots over a 2-3 metre swell, unfortunately we heard a Mayday up the coast and some unfortunate mariners lost their lives when their boat came to grief. For the return sail I elected to take the boys across to Fremantle and then sail home from there by myself, the sail to Freo was uneventful, perfect conditions, sailing home to Mandurah was slightly faster. I left the following morning at 5am with 20 - 25 knot easterly winds and made the 32 nm trip in just over 5 hours, fairly fast for a cruise in my heavily laden yacht. For photos of Rotto go to the Salimony photo album.
Waiting for the seabreeze
04 September 2006
Riley and I headed down to Dawesville for the fathers day weekend in company with Graham on Harlequin. Saturday's sail was pleasant until about 1 mile from the cut when the wind shifted and increased causing us to tack out to sea, as the wind was cold Riley decided to go to sleep and only rise when we were alongside (great crew work). The following morning Graham left early whilst Sally and Tom drove down for breakfast at the cut. After a large cooked breakfast (which Tom wants every morning) Riley took off to purchase a new lure for the sail home. As you can see from the photo we had zip wind for 80% of the sail (read motor). Riley was happy to see his normal marine life friends, dolphins and fairy penguins, but no fish were attracted to his nice new lure, Riley thinks they were to busy watching the AFL.
Off Garden Island
23 July 2006
The last post showed a great picture of Andrew but none of the new dodger so here it is. It is a simple design but beautifully made. This shot was taken off Garden Island whilst we were steaming south at 6 knots, the breeze stayed there for most of the day. As you can see from the previous post it was a cold day, normally I sail single handed but it was great to have Andrew there, all I did was make hot coffee and lunch all day, and hide behind the new dodger.
