Day 2, 7/30–Port Sanilac to Port Austin
30 July 2019 | Port Austin
Doug Lauzon | Cloudy with calm seas
Today's cruise took us 56 miles to the top of the thumb.
Port Austin is located at the southeastern entrance to Saginaw Bay. It is a port that measures 20 by 40 miles and is shallow with much at 2 to 4-foot depths. Even though tide changes to not exist in the Great Lakes, strong winds coming into the bay can change water levels by 4 feet in the southern end.
Tomorrow we will be take T.A.T., Thumb Area Transport shuttle, to Caseville. The town is 16 miles southeast of Port Austin on the shoreline. This should be quite the busy place as they celebrate "Cheeseburger Festival" this month. Thousands of visitors converge, which explains why no dockage was available at any of the marinas. Wonder what is for lunch!
