Day 8-Millikan Harbor to Jefferson Beach
05 July 2022 | Safe Harbor Jefferson Beach
Doug Lauzon | Partly sunny, warm, breezy, and easy seas
Today was our shortest day of travel at 15 miles, taking us just over an hour. At Safe Harbor Jefferson Beach we were able to meet with two vendors, one to detail the boat and the other for canvas replacement.
The site of the marina dates back to 1927 when Jefferson Beach Amusement Park opened and boasted the world's longest roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, carousel, arcade, and dance pavilion. The park was destroyed by fire in 1955 and the remaining buildings torn down in 1959 for the opening of what is now Jefferson Beach Marina.
It has always had a special meaning for me since it is where I worked onboard several boats as well as for the marina itself.
The view from the shores of this area of St Clair Shores, commonly known as the "Nautical Mile", is within a distance from the shipping channel that connects the St Clair River to the north and the Detroit River to the south. Hard to imagine that ships of this size travel the Welland Canal as we did in order to make destinations into the eastern Great Lakes or Atlantic Ocean.
Tomorrow will be our last day of travel, bringing us to our home port of the St Clair Boat Harbor in St Clair, Michigan.
