41 12.02N/ 72 34.56W July 3, 2008 12:46 pm Long Island Sound, 1.5nm SE Falkner Islands, CT Last night we celebrated our clear route out of the Gulfstream and straight on to Montauk. We were able to weave in and out of some storm activity early on and had a great sailing day basically running north up 72 degrees W +/-. Sei Via Mare cooperated by giving us great boat speed in the moderate winds and 1-2 ft of sea. A perfect sailing day. The only challenges would come in the wee hours as we approached the Ambrose- Nantucket shipping channels. With our electronics functioning properly we were ok with facing all the traffic. Unfortunately, the tracking feature of the radar unit is not reliably accurate in determining the boat direction and speed, etc. Also, in the other ship encounters we were successful in speaking with the other vessels and plot our evasive maneuver if necessary. In the New York area the ships would not answer unless hailed by name. At this time a husband and wife team heading for Block Island hears my calls and offers to provide information re garding the current traffic. We had ships in our area from all directions and welcomed the help. The 'Island Spirit' has AIS info that provides detailed info on each ship in the area including course and speed as well as where they are going, type of craft, etc. With that info we were able to clear all shipping lanes and complete our last known major navigational challenge. That still left us about 40nm to run to the lighthouse making breakfast in Montauk the next landmark. We were able to clear the point a little after 8:00am this morning and got a real push of air in Gardiners Bay. The ocean had died down just previously but the wind began to howl rounding the Shagwong Buoy. We double reefed and got sprayed as a welcome home to local waters. We beat into the white caps and made Plum Gut with the tide in our favor, clearing the light at about 10:15am. After letting a tug/barge push ahead I set about making the pancakes and bacon we never got to use and had a brunch feast (we leveled the boat to enjoy it). We kick started with the Iron Genny to maintain balance but are now running 18 degrees apparent to the wind at 255 degrees Magnetic. Wind is 20kts apparent and speed is 8.2 to 8.6 with an SOG of 6.3 fighting the current. We should be able to split down the Sound and tack in for a finish in Port Jeff. We should make it for early evening.

Smoe and Mirrors and Skol are about 22nm and 31nm behind us and Onyx should be home already. Haven't heard from Sweet Pat today but he may be home by now in Greenport.
