Our run of wind held out and we sailed down the sound to middle ground riding close to the wind with the water licking at the rails. We enjoyed some snacks of cold shrimp and chips while our home of the last 7 days chugged on. We considered sailing in but I bailed at the last minute, thinking that everything that needed to be done on this trip had already been done. I fired up the Yanmar and made the rhumb line to the harbor. Since our fuel budget had been spared by great wind almost all the time, I took the opportunity to run the engine faster to clean it up a bit as we restricted the power during the trip to 1500, except for a very few instances. In a few minutes of 3400 rpm one of my idiot lights came on along with an awful high pitch sound. The engine was over-heating.
4 miles from home and the engine doesn't want to work...or...the boat did want to sail into the harbor. We set the sails and now had to perform tacks around the inner forestay with no auxiliary propulsion. We got it done and started maneuvering like a Tuesday night race. We sailed down the harbor channel with a favorable tack and was ultimately accosted by someone in a motor boat that came right at us on the way in. It turned out to be Karl, one our crew members who had done the leg to Bermuda. It was great to see him and his entourage. At the end of the harbor we tried the engine one more time and it cooperated, proving that she only wanted to sail in and would not have bothered us if we had done so to begin with.
We landed at the club dock at around 6:30 pm and were greeted by some wellwishers through the mooring field and at the docks. It was an incredible journey and I'm glad to be back on terra firma. Smoke and Mirrors, Skol, Sweet Pat, and Onyx will reach their destinations at separate times.
