Fog Horns In The Morning
01 August 2010 | Douglas Marina, Gastineau Channel, Juneau AK
Fog horns in the Gastineau Channel this morning, although right down on the water there's at least a mile of vis (about a 100 foot ceiling -- the top decks of the cruise ship just coming in are in the mist; also underway in the channel is the National Geographic boat MV Sea Lion). Yesterday morning we departed Auke Bay and ran DE down the outside of Douglas Island in flat water, to enter the G Channel from the south. We fueled at Taku Oil (at the south end of Juneau; east side of the Channel) then crossed the Channel to the Douglas Harbor N58º16.63' W134º23.23' -- a very nice spot away from the bustle of Juneau.
While entering the Gastineau Channel yesterday, I saw a kayaker, fore and aft decks loaded down with dry bags, all kitted up for an expedition. Reminded me of Larry M. and Mike G. (Banzai Bozos) and their Alaskan kayak expedition!
After returning the rental car, we will get underway out of Juneau, heading towards Elfin Cove via Hoonah. Next installment is entirely dependent upon connectivity, which may mean a week or more until we reach Sitka (after Elfin Cove).
