Dogs, Freight Runs & The Apocalypse
21 May 2011
Gorgeous sun again Thursday & Friday! Picking away at getting DE put back together. There's a great walk for the dogs around the end of the boat basin we're in with fantastic views of the water and snow-covered mountains, a great little low-tide shale beach, and a small well-tended graveyard with residents from the 1800s.
Thursday mid-day I crewed for Don S (the boatwright who did our bottom) aboard his tender boat FV Miss Kristina. She's been sunk once and a lot of work has gone into making her right. He had a freight run from Wrangell to the small community of Port Protection -- about 5 hrs away at 9 kts (in good weather). I took Rusty along to give him some dad time and a break from 'mr relentless'. More photos posted on Facebook at "DavidEllis Nagle Boat" -- happy to friend you to see them (someday I'll have connectivity on a real computer again and will get some onto Sailblogs. Anyway, nice uneventful run in a great boat; met some of the denizens of Port Protection; overnight at Don's place there and underway again before 0600 (easy to do here as it's light by 0400).
Friday afternoon Rusty & Rascal had a thoroughly great romp at the little shingle beach along with Max (a one-legged Malemute / Husky mix) and another local dog hanging out there. Max is one of Rusty's buddies from this past winter in the boatyard. His main buddy from the yard the white wolf dog Solo (Don & Vicki's) was again hit by a car this past week, and last I heard had wandered away -- only temporary I hope; he's a great animal.
Today Saturday, marks a week that Rascal has been with us. Things seem to be settling down between he and Rusty (with vigilance and help from mom & dad). So many of Rascal's moment-to-moment behavioral characteristics are identical to Rusty's it's crazy! (must be the standard HK genetic package).
Today, apparently (at least according to some US evangelical nutters) is the beginning of the Apocalypse (yeah, yeah, heard this all before). Not so much to piss on the beliefs of others, but wouldn't believing you were one of the 'elect' pretty much disqualify one from actually being one; I mean JC (whoever / whatever he was) was a pretty humble guy. Our national trend towards only electing people to high public office with (extreme versions) of this belief system is troubling to me. I mean if your goal is to get yourself ascended in the pre-Apocalyptic Rapture, where's the motivation to work for 'peace on earth'. I'm not the first person to express concern about someone who says she wants to be this country's chief exec, yet holds this belief. I mean if you really believe it, and really believe you're one of the 'righteous', push the button and bring it on... very worrying... just saying...
