Oil rigs, shrimp boats and container ships; oh my!
31 December 1969 | 200 miles out of Hong Kong
By Dorothy
Got a call on the sat phone from Mike/Dave at about 1800 hrs PDT/0100 UTC.
They are 200 miles out of Hong Kong , at lat N 20 degrees 6.3 minutes and long E 116 degrees 41.3 minutes. The sky is blue, the winds are light, with a 1 meter swell of long period. Mike said the water was electric blue, and so clear they cloud see the paravane fish ( stabilizers) under the water.
They are exactly one day out from the waypoint they had set for themselves, which is on a line 333 degrees true and out 100 miles from Bolinao, which is on the northern coast of Luzon Island in the Philippines. The significance of this is that Bolinao is the closest typhoon shelter, in case the weather goes bad. You might remember Bolinao from Mike's crossing on ICE several years ago.
That's all for today, but stay tuned for further updates.
