Majuro Pitstop
10 June 2013
We plan on leaving Majuro Wednesday morning after fueling. It's 2000 nautical miles to Hawaii which will likely translate into 3 weeks running, as we're going to weather. Passageweather.com suggests weather enroute will be less than fun.
Majuro, in the Marshall Islands group, is a fairly large atoll, but the square miles of actual dirt are very small. The width of the atoll runs from 30 feet to maybe 200 yards. Elevation is less than 10 feet and you have to wonder if it will still be above water in 100 years. There are lots of challenges for folks here -- drought, garbage, economic opportunity, what to do with the remains of one's loved ones once they've passed, exploitation of local fishing resources by other fishing nations etc.
There do seem to be a fair number of cruisers though -- we'll meet some tomorrow night at a get-together, and the local folks, as is usually the case, are helpful.
