One Year Out of Brazil

One year ago today we sailed Sequitur out of Brazil after enduring more than six weeks in the least-friendly country that we had experienced during our three-year voyage. In the early evening of 24 April 2012 we crossed the line on the chart dividing Brazil from French Guyana and breathed a huge sigh [...]

Added a New Website

We have added a new website: Skûtsje ZonderZorg. Zonder zorg in Dutch means without worry. Our intention with the site is to provide a place to share some of the history, geography and culture of the skûtsje as we discover it. We will also use this place to document [...]

Still More Skûtsje History

We continued to attempt to track-down Douwe Albert Visser, who was the owner of Nieuwe Zorg in 1941 when she was re-registered. One of the problems we repeatedly encountered in our online searches was the effect of currently having Albert Visser and two Douwe Vissers as very competitive skûtsje racers, [...]

Some More Skûtsje History

While I was researching the history of Nieuwe Zorg, I finally found her first registration details obscured by an apparent typographical error in a transcribed online spreadsheet. She was listed as having been built in 1901 instead of 1908. I emailed the webmaster of the [...]

To Bahia Tenacatita

18 March 2010 | La Manzanilla
Michael
At 0923 on Thursday the 18th of March we weighed anchor and motored out of Bahia Chamila. The winds had died overnight and the decks were wet with dew. There was not a breath of wind, so the seas were glassy, and there was a haze or light fog reducing visibility to 4 or 5 miles, just over our horizon. Overhead and to the north and west were scattered alto-cumulus, and there were more compact alto stratus in the other two quarters.

The swell continued to back a bit, and it was now from the southwest. This would mean a 1.5 to 2 metre swell directly into the anchorage at Careyes, so we motored on past its entrance and carried on toward Bahia Tenacatita. The chart appeared to be out a mile or so, skewed to the south west. I turned on the radar and navigated into Bahia Tenacatita with the aid of the radar overlay on the chart.

The popular anchorage is in the northwest corner of the bay, but two things directed us away from there. First, we were going to be seeing Tolling and Kay, who live the winter in La Manzanilla, which is some three miles away at the opposite end of the bay. The supporting reason was that with the swell now from the southwest, it would roll directly into the northern anchorage.

At 1422 we came to 25 metres on the Rocna in 6 metres of water about a cable off the beach in front of the centre of La Manzanilla. The chartplotter showed us to be 023 degrees 1.05 miles from our actual anchorage, and about half-a-mile inland, but the gentle motion of the boat told us we were still in the water.

I quickly found a free wifi signal to snipe with Sequitur's antenna.
