Great Kills Yacht Club, Staten Island, NY, 120 Miles

We got an early start this morning (7:00 am) and started our trip from Cape May up the dreaded New Jersey Coast. When we got out into the ocean, the seas were relatively calm, but the wind was blowing a little more than I had hoped it would be at this time of the day. We started making our way north [...]

Utschs Marina, Cape May, NY, 55 Miles

We got an early start at 5:20 am today. As I started to pull out of the marina, I saw 5' depth on the depth indicator and Len was following me and he draws 5 ½ feet. I think Len pushed a little mud coming out but he made it and that is all that counts. Our trip along the rest of the C&D Canal was beautiful [...]

C&D Canal, Summit North Marina, Bear, DE, 48 Miles

Holly and I have decided that Annapolis is just about the nicest city we have visited on out trip. This morning we said a sad good bye to Annapolis and started our trip north for the final push towards home. The wind started to pick up and the seas were building as we made our way up the final part of [...]

Thursday, May 21, Annapolis, MD

I am so happy we decided to lay over another day in Annapolis before we start up the rest of the Chesapeake Bay! The weather today has been cold, windy and rainy all day. I walked Emily this morning before it started to rain and then I waited until midday for a slight break in the weather for her second [...]

Foggy, rough, windy and wild
This morning Captain Len had us off the dock at the Solomons by 6:30 am…trying to beat the pending bad weather coming up the Chesapeake Bay from the weather of Tropical Storm Ana. Our destination is Oxford, MD which is a very safe and secure port to ride out bad weather. The first part of the trip was rough and foggy, but then after about five miles the seas started to calm down and we had a better trip up to Oxford. As we made our way up the coast we noticed that a lot of the channel markers were missing and some were out of position. Fortunately I remembered reading a “notice to mariners” report that because of the severe ice in the Chesapeake Bay this winter, several of the channel markers might be off station of missing. This is definitely the case where we are now. Thank goodness for up to date charts, two chart plotters, radar and AIS and we were able to make our way safely to Oxford. We arrived mid-morning and wash down Serenity before the bad weather set in. We will be here for a couple of days until TS Ana moves on up the coast and out to sea. We walked around town and then stayed aboard for dinner with Len & Michele. Nice to be safe and secure in a beautiful harbor!

Cheers,
Holly, Ed & Emily aboard M/V Serenity
Fair winds and calm seas for all!
