FIVE MONTHS?
Our last blog post was about spring in Alanya, this post is about Fall in the Pacific Northwest. Now to fill in the last five months.

MARCH IN ALANYA
Spring is in the air in Alanya as evidenced by these tiny pink blossoms springing from the bare branch. The travel lift is busy dropping boats back in the water, owners are returning from their winter homes and we, along with two other boats, are preparing for a May departure from Turkey.

September has brought many boats into Alanya Yat Limani. With most country borders
having reopened, cruisers are traveling again. Along with our buddy boat sv Joana we are still the only cruising boats in the marina from the US/Canada. Several boats on our dock have arrived with Russian skippers and crew, many have families in both Russia and the Ukraine, an emotional time for them.
Eric continues to keep busy with boat projects. The most recent is our ECHO TECH water maker. We need a new pressure gauge and we're not able to source one here in Turkey. Ordering anything from outside the country can be challenging and this gauge from Trinidad is no exception. One of the consistent things about Turkey is the inconsistencies of policies, rules and regulations. They seem to change daily, which might be a slight exaggeration, but changes are made frequently. At the moment our pressure gauge is being held by customs in Istanbul. We've been told that any item arriving from out of country that is valued over $150.00 is subject to an additional fee.
The cost of the gauge was $120.00 USD with additional $62.00 USD for Fed Ex Priority to Turkey and $3.64 Administrative fee for credit card. We've sent the requested invoice, bank statement and boat documentation and now are waiting to hear from customs in Istanbul. Hopefully, by the next newsletter we will have a working water-maker.
SEVERAL DAYS LATER---- A big part of the problem with Customs, at least this is what we think, is that our package had to be released to a non-FedEx broker. Once we had this information we arranged for an agent in Antalya to help us. Mehmet, the agent, isn't comfortable dealing with English and we certainly haven't a grasp on Turkish, but we've managed to communicate through What's App. We've been waiting for a couple of days to hear from Customs what we owe for taxes and finally today( Tuesday) we received the email giving us instructions for the package to be released. We owe Customs 667.88TL for taxes and our agent Mehmet 1850.00 TL. After waiting close to two hours at Garanti Bank we were able to send the money to Mehmet in Antalya. Now, we have to wait and see when the package arrives. We leave in two days for a 10 day road trip to Eastern Turkey. Will we have the package by then? Stay tuned!
RECIPE FOR ONE OF THE MANY TURKISH SPICE MIXES.
Turkish food is delicious and nutritious, always fresh. This particular Turkish seasoning is a beautiful mixture of herbs and spices. It's uses are endless. It will keep for about 6 months but the first time I made the mixture I used it up within a week. We had it as a rub on chicken breasts, added it to yogurt for a yummy dip, sprinkled on roasted vegetables, and added it to a vinaigrette salad dressing--- I could go on and on.
4 Tbl. paprika
2 Tbl. garlic powder
2 Tbl. dried cilantro
1 Tbl. salt
1 Tbl. dried mint
1 Tbl. sugar.
1 Tbl. turmeric.
1 Tbl. onion powder
1/2 Tbl. ground cumin
2 tsp. black pepper
1 tsp smoked paprika
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tsp. ground sumac
Combine all herbs and spices into an airtight jar and shake----ENJOY!

In anticipation of spending time in the UK where the weather will be very cold, Eric has been working on a cockpit enclosure. 9 years ago we spent an evening on a Catamaran in Victoria, BC, despite the cold weather, we sat in the cockpit and were toasty warm. Since that time Eric has been working on a design for enclosing Pied-a-Mer’s Cockpit.

Finally we are in Port Suez, Egypt where Captain Heebie, Prince of the Sea Co. was able to arrange for Saul and Elena to disembark, car ride to Cairo and fly to the UK.
This passage was by far the most eventful passage that we have had.

Goodbye to Craig and hello to new crew Elena Horton and Saul Avery. Left Kochin Marina on February 27 for Djibouti. Due to Covid-19, we did not stop at Djibouti nor did we check into to any country that we passed on the passage to Port Suez Egypt.
Our last Port was Kochin.

Had some pretty good swells on this passage. For the first time the refrigerator door flew open and contents of fridge flew onto the floor. Eric was able to hook a bungy cord to hold it closed.

We will be here in the marina for another month. Hopefully, by the end of December we will have working engines and a new bottom half of our mast. Our sail drives need to be examined which means we have to be hauled out. We’re looking into the possibility of having the mast work and saildrive work done in one haulout.
If this is ‘t Possible we will have to have the mast replaced while in the water and then haul out for sail drives.

Here’s hoping that by this time next week we will have a sea worthy vessel. Roly the Rigger is due tomorrow to help with the stepping the mast and tuning the rigging.
It’s been a long four months. We We’ve cruisers. Cruisershave learlot about dealing with an insurance claim, ordering parts from various countries and receiving them and locating services on a small South Pacific Island.

Josh Bell, the surveyor that Pantaenius sent from Brisbane, spent a day and a half going over the boat. We have waited a week for his report to be completed and sent to Pantaenius—-waiting, waiting.
Day to Day events remain pretty much the same in the harbor except for one huge change. The derelict fishing boats were ordered to move by marina officials. We now have a view and no clanging and banging.

This was our second attempt to do a passage to Hawaii. Last November we left from American Samoa but had fuel, engine and ripped main issues. May 11 we again tried to do the passage leaving from Neiafu, Tonga. On May 15, we dismasted but we’re able to lash the mast on to the port side of the boat and motor to Pago Pago, American Samoa.

We continue to wait in Nieafu. We waited for finishing boat work, new sails from Australia, and leaving the boatyard, repairing the port engine once we had splashed, Eric's elbow to heal, Honda generator and oitboard to be fixed or not fixed.

Returned to Pied-a-Mer after a three month visit in the US. Arrangements had been made for someone to check the boat a couple of times a week and other than a film of mold,which we expected, everything was good. The weather is hotter that #@¥^_¥£ and it takes longer to do very simple tasks. It’s necessary to wear a sweat head band or it’s impossible to see.

Arrived in Nuku'alofa on Sunday May 28, 2017 from Opua, New Zealand. 10 days and 9 nights at sea.
February 2018 Tongatapu was badly damaged by Cyclone Gita. Worst storm to hit the island in 60 years. Pied-a-Mer III was in Neiafu, Vava'u and Eric and I were in Oregon.
