PPJ Day 1
03 April 2016 | The Pacific Ocean
Vandy
Good morning!
We left Yelapa yesterday morning at 8:45 am and headed out across the Pacific. We had light wind for the first two hours but then the wind filled in from the NW and lasted all through the day and night averaging about 15 knots. The waves were about 3-6 feet, confused for awhile and then coming out of the NW, which as that was more or less on our beam, made for a bit of a bumpy, rolly night.
A day in, we're both getting our sea legs, and our first "cruise bruises," and we're pretty tired this morning, after our first night of watches. It will get better.
We made about 170 miles in the past 24 hours, giving us an average speed of about 7 knots. I did see one boat speed reading of 10.3 knots yesterday; going upwind, NOT surfing down a wave. Yee haw.
Eric hooked up our wind pilot, Leela, almost immediately, and she has been steering us like a champ (without using any electricity yay!). I'm always amazed at how it works.
The only other boat we saw was a tug that passed a half mile from us yesterday afternoon. We saw him clearly on our AIS, and also with our eyeballs, so we knew he was there. It's funny how sometimes, with all that open space, two boats will end up in roughly the same patch of ocean.
In the middle of the night, I discovered (by smell) that a flying fish had flown in through the hatch and landed on our stove before expiring. It was a nice gesture, but I threw it back into the ocean. We also had two squids and another couple of flying fish on deck this morning. Some spotted dolphins came by yesterday, while we were still in Banderas Bay, to play with SCOOTS for a little while. A red-footed booby has been circling this morning but has not landed on board as of yet.
That's it for now.
