You may be wondering why I haven't been sharing snippets from our time in New Zealand...
Well, we're not in New Zealand; we're still in the United States. As we've been telling people here, we came for the holidays and stayed for the heart surgery.
First of all, both of us are fine. Now. When we were in New Zealand last April, I discovered that Eric has a heart murmur, when I laid my head on his chest one night, and heard his heart going "lub -WHOOSH, lub-WHOOSH," instead of the normal "lub-dub, lub-dub." After seeing a cardiologist in Auckland, Eric knew that he had a heart valve that would need repair within a few years. After consulting with a cardiologist in San Francisco last December, he was told that NOW was the time to have it fixed.
So here we still are, three months later. Eric's valve was repaired in January, and he's been spending his time recovering since then. And it's all going well.
Knowing that heart surgery followed by an extended stay in North America was a possibility when we left New Zealand last December, we set SCOOTS up in a safe and comfy space in a marina, under the watchful eyes of yachtie friends and the marina staff. These friends and marina staff have eased our minds and helped us out in innumerable ways, including checking on SCOOTS, picking up parcels that have arrived for us, and managing loose ends (such as the storage of our car, Baxter). Hugs and a big thank you to all the people who have been looking out for the facets of our life that are in New Zealand.
Meanwhile, we've taken the opportunity presented by all this extra time in the Northern Hemisphere to visit with many of our friends and family, some of whom we'd never be able to see on one of our short trips to the area. We've enjoyed their company very much, and, often, the gift of their generosity, as well. Thanks so much to all of you who made time in your busy schedules to see us, or who opened your homes to us and made us couch-surfing nomads feel comfortable there. It's been wonderful to be with all of you. Spending time with you has been our lemonade.
As our fourth month in the Northern Hemisphere begins, we're itching to return home - beyond itching, actually, whatever that word would be: to sleep in our own bed, to be untidy if we want to be, to stop living out of our duffels, to re-immerse ourselves in the slower pace of life that we're accustomed to. According to the trajectory of Eric's recovery, we're looking at returning to SCOOTS sometime in April. Just in time to start preparing for our trip to Fiji....
