Impeccable Timing
02 December 2013 | Rodney Bay, St. Lucia
Lynn
We left the mooring ball at the Pitons at 0740 and started to head north. The sky was threatening rain, but there were glimpses of blue sky in between, so we were hopeful we wouldn’t get dumped on. However, the rain coats were close at hand, just in case!
The trip from the Pitons to Rodney bay was broken by the sighting of “Savvy”, a Carricaou sloop owned by a Hasher and the assistant manager of Port Louis Marina. Danny had brought her up for the “Mango Cup” regatta, and he had our dock neighbour Dirk as crew as well. We snapped a few shots of them on the way.
Our other sighting was of “Izzy R” as we were heading into Rodney Bay. We knew that Izzy and Jeff had been in Marigot Bay and were going to make that massive trip (5 miles maybe?) up to Rodney Bay. We took pictures of each other’s boats as they passed us (being a large motor vessel and all, that was to be expected).
Our fuel situation was getting low, and I had the not-too-bad idea of running over to Customs and Immigration at the Marina while Ken got the diesel tank topped up and the jerry cans filled. It sure beat having to worry about getting the dinghy thrown together in a potential squall. It worked out beautifully! I even managed to pick up a fresh loaf of bread.
We headed out to anchor in the bay. Rodney Bay can be a little tricky to anchor in at times, as the bottom is sometimes just some hard scrabble with nothing for an anchor to get a grip in. We were hoping that our fancy new Rocna anchor would make it a little easier this time around. We went back to an area that we have had lots of success in before, and the Rocna snagged very nicely. And the timing couldn’t have been better. Within about 5 minutes, the heavens opened into a tropical downpour. Perfect, as this rinsed off the salt collected from the last couple of days of travel.
So now we are settled into Rodney Bay for we aren’t sure how long. It may be a couple of days, it may be a couple of weeks. We will just have to see.
