Cruising the Sea again
It feels great to be on the move again and visiting our favorite anchorages. We left La Paz intending to go to Isla San Francisco, but as we got near the wind came up and we were sailing so nicely on a reach with flat seas and on a perfect course for the next anchorage (San Evaristo) 8 miles further, that we decided to keep going and skip San Francisco this time around. A few miles away from San Evaristo we spotted 2 whales jumping and playing. One would come straight up out of the water and crash on his side, while the other would roll over and slap his fins on the surface, or dive and slap his tail. They continued to play this way for about a half an hour, when I realized that they were much closer and were on a converging course with us. We altered course away from them but they kept coming closer until finally their last jump was about 50 feet from our boat!! We’ve never had a whale jump that close to our boat before and it was quite a sight to see! It was also a little nerve wracking because we didn’t know how close they would come. Fortunately they changed course and went behind us and kept frolicking.
