Yelapa Day 2
19 November 2009
The anchorage here at Yelapa was quiet, smooth, and a little cool so we decided to stay another day. We actually had to use covers last night! It must have cooled down to around 65 degrees.
This morning we went snorkeling all around the bay. The water is crystal clear and like Las Tres Maretas, the fish are quite large. Not too much plant life here though. We were going across the bay with the dinghy and saw a dark hull approaching the bay entrance. I said it looked like a J-boat and wouldn't you know it, it was Sceptre, the J-130 from San Francisco that also did the Baja Ha-Ha. Now what is the probability of 2 J-130's (there are only 34 in existence) anchoring in the same small bay in Mexico? There were only about a total of 6 other sailboats here in Yelapa the past two days so the odds are even greater.
We talked to Sceptre's owner for awhile. J-World is going to use Sceptre temporarily as a replacement to the J-120 that sunk. J-World has just begun a charter operation in Puerto Vallarta and the J-120 was going to be the initial charter boat. So Sceptre will stay down here for awhile. He also commented about the last leg of the Baja Ha-Ha and "Hot Lips", our yellow spinnaker. His crew thought for sure they were going to catch us, especially when they saw us take our red spinnaker down. But then they saw the big yellow spinnaker and knew they were in trouble. He said our boat just launched ahead after we hoisted. They could see the lips too. He thought it was great that the two boats were dueling with each other.
Our next stop is either Ipala which is about 32 miles or Chamela which is 84 miles away.
