First Day and Night of Leg 1
26 October 2010
The parade in San Diego Bay was awesome. Imagine 190 boats all congregating around Shelter Island. There was a countdown for the parade and Lee treated it just like a race start and positioned Sirocco at the front of the pack.
The wind was 20-25 at the start and we reefed early to keep Sirocco on her feet. We only lost about .3 knots doing that so it was well worth it. After about an hour and a half we put up the red spinnaker and pulled away from the fleet. I think we were the first boat so put up a spinnaker. We had a nice ride for about 5 hours and then ended up motorsailing all night when the wind died. Big swells part of the night too. A couple of the crew felt a little quesy but are okay now. We just put up the spinnaker again and are enjoying a real nice ride right now. We have gone 160 nautical miles in 10 hours so are making great time. We don't see any boats around us so I think we're ahead of the fleet.
We saw So Inclined around Ensenada last night just before sunset and talked to Manfred for a little bit. All is well aboard their boat.
