Final Leg and Arrival in Cabo

04 November 2010 | Cabo San Lucas
The last leg from Bahia Santa Maria to Cabo San Lucas was fairly uneventful. We left Bahia Santa Maria at around 6:00 am and was able to put up the red spinnaker within an hour. We sailed under spinnaker for about 12 hours. Finally we had smooth seas and about 10 knots of breeze so it was a very comfortable sail. We caught a bunch of fish, one almost every 30 minutes but they were all bonita so we threw then back. We had 2 poles out and at one point both poles got hits at the exact same time. Both David and Matt were reeling them in. It was lots of fun to watch, especially when the fish tried to cross the fishing lines. But again the fish were bonita so we threw them back.

In the early evening, when the wind picked up and the boat was doing about 8-9 knots under spinnaker, we had a HUGE hit on one of the poles. Matt grabbed the pole but the fish just took off with the line. All the line was spinning out and Matt couldn't do anything. The reel actually got hot to the touch and Matt had to put on a glove. The line finally broke so we lost him. Probably a good thing.

We saw a green flash at sunset! Wow! It was really bright. Sorry, no photos as we were too much in awe to grab a camera.

The wind died at night and we motored all the way to Cabo. Slips at Cabo Marina are limited this year and some of the Baja Haha'ers were getting a little testy about wanting a slip. The forecast was wind out of the southeast which would leave the Cabo anchorage exposed so people who originally didn't want a slip changed their minds at the last minute and didn't want to anchor. I really admire the HaHa organizers' patience in dealing with some real knuckleheads. We were far down on the original Baja HaHa signup list which is used to prioritize who gets a slip so we figured our chances to get a slip were very low and decided to go to Puerto Los Cabos Marina which is 15 miles from Cabo San Lucas. That was the right decision. Right after we rounded the cape, the wind picked up to 25-30 knots and the anchorage at Cabo San Lucas got pretty wild. There was all kinds of mayhem on the radio as people were dragging anchors, setting anchors on top of each other, etc. As someone said this morning, it was like a scene from "Lord of the Flies". We got to Marina Puerto Los Cabos at around 11:00am, tied up the boat, and took a taxi to the condo in Cabo.San Lucas. It was a pretty easy process for us.
