Reflections on Baha Haha

05 November 2010 | Cabo San Lucas
Everyone is napping now after the HaHa Beach Party. The highlight of the party was the "From Here to Eternity" kissing contest. Couples try to emulate the famous kissing in the surf scene with Burt Lancaster and Deborah Karr. It was pretty funny, especially since the surf in Cabo today was quite large.

We had some funny incidents on the trip. Like when one crew member who was sleeping outside thought the town of Turtle Bay shuts off all its power at night since he saw the lights go out. This crew member even convinced another crew member who was also sleeping outside that this was the case. But what really occured is that the had boat swung around and they were looking at the opposite shore.

Another funny incident was when the squid attacked Matt. He thought I threw something at him. When I saw something on the deck, I went to pick it up and screamed when I felt the slimy surface. Then Matt screamed because I screamed. Fortunately, it was the middle of the night and the rest of the crew was sound asleep so no one heard us.

We were hassling Matt about his lack of fishing compentence since we weren't catching anything. Then he hooks up a HUGE fish that we can't bring in because it's too big.

We had a few issues onboard. Too much pressure on the spinnaker to get the sock down, wrapping the spinnaker around the headstay, a fresh water leak (no showers for anyone), and problems with the running lights but they were all resolved. Lesson #1: If you have a spinnaker wrap, put your most rookie driver on the helm and he will probably accidentally gybe the boat which will unwrap the spinnaker and save the day. Lesson #2: Check all hose clamps on all water lines often. Lesson #3: Solder all wiring, don't use butt connectors. And finally, the most important lesson is that you need to be flexible when you are out in the ocean. Change your plans accordingly if the conditions change. We did this in last year's HaHa when we decided to leave a day early. We did it again this year when we decided not to go into Cabo San Lucas but go further down the coast to Marina Puerto Los Cabos. We had a much easier time than a lot of the other boats.

We heard the news today that the boat that grounded at Bahia Santa Maria is a complete loss. There was some hope that it would come off the sand with the super high tide, especially since it has a full keel. But this morning the keel separated from the hull. At least the owner was able to recover a lot of components and personal items from the boat with the help of the Baja Ha-Ha fleet.
