Cortez Crush to La Paz
14 November 2010 | La Paz

We left Los Muertos before daybreak for the trip north to La Paz. The wind was almost on the nose and the seas were pretty high so for a while we were only doing 5.5 knots. We were out for about 2.5 hours when we heard chatter on the radio that Commanders' Weather was forecasting a full northerly blow in the Sea with windspeed 25-30 knots. Some of the boats behind us turned around and went back to Los Muertos but we didn't see those winds on the grib weather files so we decided to push on. It was a pretty good bash all the way to La Paz but not too bad. Mike Cobas named the passage the "Cortez Crush" .We made the 56 miles in about 8.5 hours.
We are staying at Marina Palmira for about a week. The rates are very decent, actually cheaper than Oceanside. We already had a welder come by to re-weld the compressor bracket and have our sail in for repair. Services are fairly efficient here in La Paz. Friday night we had tacos and tequila testing onboard Sirocco with Mike and Bob from So Inclined joining us. I broke out the bottle of tequila given to me from my colleagues at NCTD. The bottle was beautiful and the tequila was excellent. Needless to say, we all slept well that night.
We saw the Kelly Peterson 44 "Rocinante" here in Palmira. We met Rocinante last year in Oceanside as they were making their way down to San Diego for the HaHa. They spent the year here in Mexico and are on their way to Puerto Vallarta. We hope to meet up with them sometime and swap stories.
