I'm pleased to report the practice yesterday really helped. Sirocco placed second in the A fleet today. Yeah! The A fleet consists of: a J160, another J130, two Beneteau 42s7's, a Jenneau Sunfast 40, a C&C 37, a MacGregor 65, and the custom Sparkman & Stevens Kialoa 3 which is almost 80 feet. The PHRF handicaps range from -19 to 81.
One of the Beneteau 42s7's called Cirque has won the regatta for the past two years by a significant margin. We finished just 52 seconds behind them on corrected time in today's 20 mile race. We also finished over 3 minutes ahead of the other J130 and over 2 minutes corrected on the J160. We were first to the weather mark and remained first until just before the leeward mark.
This is the first time we've raced Sirocco against other J sprit boats and were very pleased with our performance. Lee keeps complaining how awful our mainsail is (it is very old and is a cruising main) but we did fine with it. It helped that the wind was about 9-12 knots today.
The crew was awesome. Lee of course drove, James was tactician, Mark on main, Mike C. and Bill on jib trim, Patty on pit, Anne squirrel and helping hoist the spinnaker, Dave on spinnaker trim, Marisa on pole, and Mike and Cathy on foredeck. Let's hope we can do well again tomorrow.
