Tsunami Update
11 March 2011 | Banderas Bay
After spending the day sailing all around Banderas Bay to escape the surge from the tsunami, we ended up anchoring in La Cruz. None of the marinas would allow boats back in due to continuing surge. The changes in depth here at anchor at 6:00pm are pretty amazing. One minute we have 11.7 feet under the keel and the next 5 minutes we have 10 feet. It seems that the surges in the early evening are more intense than the 1:30 pm forecasted tsunami strike. We did just hear that the marina we're staying in is letting in boats so we will head over there early in the morning and get ready for another race.
Sirocco's stores are pretty bare since she is in race mode but I found some pasta and Ragu sauce to cook up. We even found a couple of blankets and a sleeping bag (Chic, your bag is still onboard, thanks for leaving it!). We snagged the chain, rode and delta anchor before we left the dock but forgot the bow roller so we had to hand set the Fortress anchor that has just 25 feet of chain. I'm sure glad Mike Cobas and James are here to help. The wind settled down and we have 140 feet out in 20 feet of water so we feel pretty secure. There are probably over 120 boats here in the anchorage.
It was a great day of sailing but some of the cruisers were a little on edge. The radio chatter was rude at times. Skippers were arguing with the harbormasters wanting to get back to their slips. Whoops, there goes another surge. The water is rushing in. I guess this will occur throughout the night.
We are all a little tired but feel safe.
