Sirocco Takes 3rd in BBR

12 March 2011 | Banderas Bay, Jalisco, Mexico
Last night at anchor during the leftover surge from the tsunami was a little too exciting. We dragged anchor and came close to hitting a couple of boats. The surge caused the rode to wrap around the anchor and around the keel. The 25 feet of chain just wasn't enough. After we anchored 3 times it finally held. All this happened in the middle of the night so we didn't get much sleep.

We still see the tsunami effects today in the harbor. It seems that we have 15 minute tidal changes. It's very strange.

Today's racing didn't go as well as Thursday. We were over the start line early. And the wind was 14-16 knots which was more than we like for the genoa. Our mainsail is really blown out so we ended up reefing to get it a little flatter. But at the awards dinner tonight we found out we took third in the regatta for the A fleet. The A fleet is the faster and bigger boats ranging from 40 to 80 feet. Our second place on Thursday helped a lot. Sirocco was the only boat in the A Fleet that looked like a cruising boat, with her solar panels, windlass, and bimini. But we were still fast and beat the other J130 that didn't have any of that gear and had a brand new "cruising" main made out of dacron and carbon. We actually had to give the other J130 9 seconds/mile handicap because they used a smaller headsail and have a shallower keel. First place went to a Beneteau 42s7 which has now won 3 years in a row and second place to a J160 that is a local boat.

We are very pleased with our performance. The crew did an awesome job. It was fun to take a break from cruising and get a little racing in. And the racing venue here in Banderas Bay is wonderful. Flat seas, consistent winds 10 to 15 knots, 75 degree temperatures and whales breeching ahead of the boats during the upwind leg of the race. It just doesn't get any better.
