Finally, We get to Sail!
25 April 2011 | Isla San Francisco
Yesterday we anchored at Puerto Balandra which is a beautiful bay just outside La Paz. But the corumel winds kicked up during the night, was 30 knots for a half hour. Fortunately there was no fetch so our anchor held fine. Needless to say the wind was loud and kept us up most the night.
This morning three very tired souls aboard Sirocco all agreed we needed to move to another spot that has better protection from the corumels. We originally were thinking about a spot north on the mainland but while we were under way we passed by our friends on Tapatai and they said they haven't had any corumels up here. So we decided to go to a prettier anchorage on Isla San Francisco.
The corumel wind is a southerly wind that kicks up when the air in La Paz is cool and the winds on the Pacific side of Baja are strong. There are no mountains west of La Paz to stop the wind. These winds always kick up during the night so it's difficult to plan for them when you select an anchoring spot.
We had light to moderate winds today on our trip to Isla San Francisco and were finally able to sail for a significant period of time. I went down below to take a nap and when I woke up I thought we were at a dock, the boat was so quiet. The seas were perfectly flat and the winds ESE letting us sail on a beam reach.
