Bonfire and Potluck on the Beach

13 May 2011 | San Juanico
One of great things about cruising is all the different people you meet. There were 23 boats in San Juanico so someone suggested a potluck and bonfire on the beach. At around 5:30 the bay was buzzing with dinghies zipping over to the beach carrying precious cargo (dinner). We met some new folks and chatted with old friends.

One couple, Steve and Tawny on Imagine, have become fast friends. We first met them last week in Puerto Escondido when they offered us a ride into Loreto in their friend’s crew cab dually pickup truck. Since the taxi fare is 700 pesos (about $60) we gladly accepted. We all piled in with Mike and Bob in the pickup bed. They took us all around Loreto for shopping. They have an interesting boat. It is an aluminum hull, has a two level pilot house, two bilge keels and two screws (propellers) with one engine. Typically they leave their boat on the hard in Guayamos but this year will leave it in the water until December, sail it La Paz, and then load it on Dockwise Yacht Transport to be shipped to Vancouver. Once the boat is in Vancouver, they will do a complete refit. Steve was telling us that the access to some parts of the boat is virtually impossible. For instance, he can’t access the engine to check the oil; his wife Tawny has to do it. Both boats left San Juanico this morning; we turned right to go south and they turned left to head north. I hope we run into them again.

Yesterday Bob braved the cold water (yes, the water is still only about 71 degrees) and went snorkeling. But he did wear a wetsuit. He said the fish were incredible. I’m still recovering from my cold so I didn’t want to chance it and stayed dry. The anchorage here in San Juanico is one of my favorites. It is beautiful and very protected. We’ve been sleeping in until 8:30-9:00 because it is so quiet.

We are currently sailing about 8 knots with 16 knots of true wind. The wind is out of the southwest but we probably shift soon. Our next stop is Isla Coronados where we will have lunch and try to access the internet. Rumor has it that you can get a cell signal in the anchorage allowing Banda Ancha to connect. I will post this blog entry then. After Isla Coronados we will head to Honeymoon Cove for the night and then return to Puerto Escondido tomorrow to meet up with Mike on So Inclined. We are also hoping Pacifico makes it up here in the next few days.
