The "Back Route"
22 January 2010 | Georgetown, Great Exuma
gary
We departed Black Point heading south thru the Exumas with the ultimate objective to make Georgetown in time to meet all the kids?Brian, PJ, Krissy, Katie and Jimmie, who arrive 1-23 and 1-24 into Georgetown via Nassau on the little plane with seat belts. Writing this from Elizabeth Harbor (Georgetown) having taken the "back route" along western side of Great Exuma; the skinny side with lots of shallow waters, narrow cuts and navigating often by the timing of high tide. Once we reached the dreaded Hog Cay Cut, we realized our buddies on Neverbored and Star Shot would be continuing east to Long Island on a mission towards the Turks and possibly the DR (Dom. Republic). So, in the morning we all took a dingy ride to investigate the dreaded cut, planned out the strategy for getting thru unscathed, said good bye to our friends after which Lisa me and Georgetown hit the cut into the current 2 hours before high tide, made it thru without incident and pushed on to Georgetown. Quite an organized cruising community they have here. More active and organized really than anywhere we've ever been. Morning announcements, introductions, help wanted, help available, volleyball tournaments, eating and drinking parties, knot tying seminars, song, dance and good cheer etc. There are currently 130 cruisers here, a much lower number the usual. By the time Regatta Week begins in March, there have been upwards of 400. Our plans are to take the kids to the "outback" and land of "skinny waters" where we hope to hunt down some lobsters and have the fun that comes from all being together finally, once again. Lisa has the boat looking perfect with all beds made, towels and food for all. The moon in waning, topped off with fuel, found and fixed an oil leak, added 4 bottles of Rum to the stores for sundowners the next 10 days. All is good. Cheer
