Almost the end of Leg One

14 October 2012 | Avalon, Catalina Island CA
Capt'n Mike
Today I said goodbye to the love of my life and my best friend ever. Julie and Larry caught the early express to the mainland. The silence on the boat is deafening. The last two and a half weeks went by so fast.
It started with the best send-off party EVER. My family, our Phoenix friends and all our dock mates were there. Great food, lots of libations, gifts and tears. Everyone from G-dock was there to help cut the dock lines. Thanks everyone for making it a very special send-0ff.
Larry and I motor-sailed Slowride the 72 miles to Two Harbors on Catalina Island without issues. It took just about 13 hours. We partook in the tradition of a couple of Buffalo milks and a Buffalo burger. We broke in the new dive Hookah and shot 4 or 5 fish. Then it was off to Avalon to meet with Firebird and Julie for a week long adventure. We even talked Pattie into coming over for the week. A well deserved vacation. We ate good, drank plenty, and even rented golf carts and drove the red zone (bok, bok, bok). Wonderful time with John and Sandy from Firebird. We can’t wait to see them somewhere in the islands.
The next leg starts this Wednesday as I will be single handing Slowride to San Diego. I will leave Avalon around 10 or 11 o’clock. I have made arrangements for a slip at Harbor Island West (our old marina in San Diego). There I will meet up with Julie, Karen, and Mike to provision, acquire Mexican fishing license and Visa. Mike will be joining me for the Mazatlan leg.
We will shove-off sometime around mid-night for Ensenada to check-in then a 7 day sail to Los Frailes. We may stop at Mag bay to rest if we get too tired. Then there is the 30 hour sail to Mazatlan where we hope to stay at Mike and Pattie’s time share for a few days (maybe a week). More updates and pictures to follow.
