Tulum Ruins

31 January 2008 | Yucatan, Mexico
Heather

Since we're waiting for weather, we went to see the Tulum ruins today. They are 2 hours down the coast from the marina we're staying at, along what some marketing expert has named the "Mexican Riviera". This whole stretch of coast has one resort after another and many of those tourists head for Tulum since the ruins are so close.

They weren't anything like Chichen-Itza, but they are the only ones that are perched right on the ocean. This makes for pretty pictures and views of the ruins against the turquoise water. If it was summer with calm winds, you could anchor right off the ruins behind the barrier reef, but not now with the winter trades blowing steady.

We had a nice picnic lunch there in the park (we're sort of enjoying our peanut butter now since once we run out that'll be it as you can't get peanut butter very easily here, along with pickles!) and sat on the beach for a little while before hopping the bus back home.

We plan to leave tomorrow afternoon for Belize if we can get checked out of Mexico tomorrow morning. If it is anything like checking in...... well, let's hope not!!
