Water Fight Pangas

09 February 2010 | San Blas Estuary
Jodee
The fireworks that were scheduled for February 3rd were postponed, due to rain. Saturday February 6th, I headed to town to do the weekly shopping and saw that the fireworks tower had been built so tonight it will be celebration in the town. We were told that the ponga procession would start at 3:00 pm. I went to the flea market and then to the local stores to get what was on the list and back to the boat by 3:00 pm, of course I took time out for the taco with Lori, Rich, Amy and Jason at the taco stand.

Now everything is put away and we are sitting out in the cockpit just waiting and watching. The pongas start coming out into the estuary and then there is a water fight between two pongas. They are using Clorox bottles that have been cut at an angle to make a scoop. As they motor along they scoop water up from the bow wake and when still they reach over the side and scoop up water. They are pretty good at this because it looked like small fire boats with water spraying everywhere.

Then Russ looked back at the sailing vessel Pieces and they had 5 or 6 pongas around them and the water fight was on. Pieces only had a bucket each with rope attached and they were to high off the water to get a good return on the pongas and was no competition for that many pongas. We heard later that they had forgotten to dog down one of their hatches so now there is salt water down below. Moral of this story "make sure you are prepared when activities may prevail". We had been told to make sure all hatches were closed and that the dingy be on deck because even if not provoked you may end up with water on deck. Pieces from what we were told did not provoke the water fight, but had a great time anyway. I know we had a great time watching them. Russ thought that he had it all on the sony cam disc and when I went to download it to the hard drive it was not there. He thinks that the magnet he was wearing wiped the disc clean. After the water fights it was time for the father from the church to bless the fleet. We did not get to see this because our boat was anchored two far away.
