Swingin' on a Star

An ocean going catamaran

Sail Training

Given half of our crew is composed of power boaters, it seemed appropriate to spend a day working on sailing skills and man overboard practice. A day spent training is a day well invested (I think Kore said it better in the comments!).

Jeff and Flo kept asking me what the big white fluffy things were for, but once we got past that things moved along well. We spent most of the time on jibes and MOB. With any luck we'll be able to setup for wind on the starboard beam/quarter and carry it all the way down to point conception. That said, I'm sure there'll be some jibes in there somewhere. We also talked about avoiding MOB with harnesses, tethers and jacklines. Given it looks like we'll be doing at least on night at sea, we also went over night protocol, light rules and all the rest.

It was a fun day of sail training and reminded me of how much there is to think about and know when it comes to sailing safely in the ocean.

We have one more day of 8-9' wind waves along the coast tomorrow, but Wednesday is looking good with combined seas at 10' or less. We're all really eager to head south!
