Swingin' on a Star

An ocean going catamaran

Escape from San Andres

We got up at 5AM this morning but took it easy getting ready to depart. We had to stow the BBQ, the
toaster and especially the knife block. We had to make coffee. All the important things. We had us and
the boat ready to go at about 7:30. The wind had started to get up so we took our time bringing up the
very well dug in anchor. Once at the waterline we had to drag it halfway down the channel to clean it off.
When we got it .6392/60
3/8/26on the bow I tied it to the cross bar, it is going to be a bumpy day.

San Andres is really a beautiful place. It has the crystal-clear Caribbean water of the Bahamas or
Grenadines, it has sand bars, a barrier reef, little islands in the lagoon and more. It is unfortunately
smack in the middle of the Summer breeding ground for Hurricanes. Topical waves percolate here
weekly, creating nasty low pressure systems. The current wave may begin to cause trouble on Thursday
so we got while the getting was good.

Well, as good as it gets here. Exiting the channel we came head on to the 8 foot or so, short wind wave
seas as we raised the main. The wind had also backed to 060T, too tight to really sail when you are headed
013. So we motor sailed for a bit at 5 knots, bashing into the big head seas, now 45 off the starboard bow.
Later in the morning the wind turned to our favor and we got the jib out and started bashing at 8-9 knots,
much faster and much less fun.

There were a few showers about and lots of clouds but surprisingly nothing sinister. We only got the
slightest touch of rain on deck. I would have actually preferred more to wash off some of the salt from
the green water coming over the bow all day. (I just looked out the window and there's a big shower
right in front of us, I may get my wish!)

As I pull end of day weather, and the sun sets on the cloudy southwest Caribbean, all is good onboard.
We are just leaving Providencia to starboard. Carl was not feeling hot in the morning (sea sickness) but
he's got a patch on and doing much better now. Jeff is good too. Day one in the bag, four days more to
Florida.
