Heading to Panama

Our original plan had us going from Jamaica to Cuba. But as we were enjoying our time in Jamaica and we had received a few recent bad report on Cuba we decided to stay longer in Jamaica and miss out Cuba. When it was time book out of Jamaica I explained to the immigration officer that we had spent longer [...]

Jamaica mon

With Sue back in Curacao we provisioned for the sail north to Jamaica, said goodbye to new friends, and motored away from Curacao Marine. As we entered to channel to exit Curacao harbour we called the Port Authority on VHF to ask them to open the bridge, but no answer. After a number of failed attempts [...]

Back in the water

I arrived back in Curacao on 24 Jan to get work done on Sojourn 1 before Sue arrived. I was surprised by the number of people who were staying at the marina on their boats. Most were waiting for the weather to improve with others waiting on work or parts. A large number of different nationalities were [...]

Haul out at Curacao

Time to catch up on the blog. A lot has happened since the last blog but I'll try to cover off on the important points of our cruising adventure.

Monemvassia to Gulluk Turkey

03 August 2017
Monemvassia is a very nice little place and the town query offers good protection from the summer winds. And of course we had a great time with Saul and Rosie plus Bruce and Jackie of Leela. A great place overall.
Next stop Port Milos. Generally a good sail but the seas were sloppy around the islands. This is large well protected bay with a lot of tourist ferries visiting. We stayed there a few days waiting better weather and enjoying the town. We also needed to replace our French gas cylinder (it ran out) with a Greek one. Almost fitted!!
From Milos to Ios. This was always intended as an overnight stay only - and once we realised that we were in the middle of an under 30's holiday resort ski park we were happy to leave the following morning.
Next day we headed to Varthi on Astipalaia. A reasonably fast sail finishing with some large seas on the beam. Varthi is a large (almost land locked) bay with a small taverna at one end. But it has no wifi and only poor phone connection, and its a combination of dirt and bitumen road into town 24kms away. We were intending to stay a few days waiting for the meltemi so we walked 12km to a taverna for lunch and a taxi into town. Once we organised a scooter we were able to get into town each day for Internet. We ended up spending 9 enjoyable days at vathi. The little taverna at the end of Vathi is great.
As we were sitting at Vathi we heard about the earthquake at Kos. If it wasn't for the meltimi holding us up we would have been there. So we changed our plans and decided on an over night stop in a nice little bay on the east side of Kalimnos. The following day was a down hill run into Gulluk for the check in formalities in Turkey before heading over to the marina we had booked for 7 nights at Port Iasos. Its a safe little marina so we took the opportunity to visit a few other places by bus. We even had the opportunity to bus it down to Bodrum and catch up with Kemal and his wife. They were great hosts taking us out to dinner and showing us around.
While at Port Iasos we would take the ferry into Gulluk each day for lunch or dinner at some of the great little eating areas around town.
