Grand Baie

Gina and Paul
Well, we got sick of the hustle and bustle and decided to move on. Little did we know we were moving onto touristville. This is only a short 13 miles from Port Louis but has a whole new feel to it. It is one of the tourist centers for Mauritius and as such, has a good variety of restaurants and tourist activates going on. We are anchored in a large bay with several dozen other boats. The entrance to this bay is not really an entrance; you just find a way over the reef. It was rather nerve wracking as we came to it, as it was low tide. As the depth gauge went down to 0.1(it doesn’t read any lower than that) we were waiting for the obligatory slow down as we would slowly hit the bottom (we were moving slow). It didn’t happen and we made it in to deeper water to anchor, if you can call 10ft deeper water. The charting for this area is poor at best. At least we knew we wouldn’t go aground at low tide now that we were at anchor. We met up with Frank and Karen from Tahina for dinner and went over some plans for an island tour that we decided we would arrange ourselves. We plan to hire a car for 2 days to take in most of the island. We also perused the local stores to see if one can provision here, without having to go back to Port Louis. It seems they have everything we could ever want in the way of provisions. We had already stocked up the freezer with meat from the local market, so we were not in the market for too much. But we will still make a visit to the fresh market at Port Louis when we check out.
