Crater Bay

After enjoying some quiet time and a few cocktail hours at Des and Nell’s place, it was time to move on. MacGyver also had to have one more go at the watermaker, but it was to no avail. We pickled it for the last time (ran out of pickling solution) and put in an order for new pump and parts in South Africa. Still, there are not many places where you can sit on the back of your boat, doing dishes and watch the turtles as they meander around the boat and entertain me in what is usually a mundane chore. 10 miles around the corner was Crater Bay, our next stop. This was a very busy place with many yachts moored and anchored. It has the advantage of having a very wobbly, but floating, dinghy dock. It is always nice to be able to step on shore without stepping in the salt water first. There is a very pleasant Yacht club here and for the grand sum of 80,000A (USD $31) per month, we can leave our dinghy at the dock with relative security. Security around here is our number one concern, so we try to do what we can to deter thieves. We were told that the local people are not generally violent and most of the crime is against property, not people. But this is not something that we think about when someone with a knife is on our boat. The yacht club has an amazing setting amongst an old sugar cane train. It really adds to a great atmosphere and pleasant surroundings while the sun goes down. The prices are also very reasonable. 1 pizza and 2 drinks each for the grand total of $9.40 for the 2 of us. Not quite Thai prices but very reasonable. Needless, to say, we will be back. There is a “marina” here of sorts. The dock has power points and water outlets for boats but the dock that you would pull your boat up to at high tide is nothing but rock and mud at low tide. Not sure who planned this but they missed something big time. Still, the staff here are very friendly and helpful.
