Cape Point

26 December 2014
Gina
We drove down to Cape Point, next to the Cape of Good Hope. Cape Point is where the Cap lighthouse is situated and a pleasant view point out to the southern Atlantic Ocean. There is a funicular up there but we elected to walk, to save waiting in line, as the bus tour tourists were taking it as they didn’t have the time we had. To think that this is the last of the nasty pieces of water we have to navigate before the Atlantic. Today it looked quite benign and we only hope it will look as good when we come to round the Cape. Nothing would be complete without a walk to the Cape of Good Hope. It got this name because it was the last point before a ship could head north again and into the pleasant trade winds of the Atlantic. And to think that over 650 ships have sunk in the 3 km stretch of water between Cape Point and Cape of Good Hope. We have no intention of making it 651. The mix of currents that get to collide at the bottom of a continent certainly make for incredible breakers against the coastline, even though the sea was light this day.
