Grenada, Day 1
09 December 2015
Sometimes the streets become too steep and are finished off with steps.
It was a rather pleasant overnight sail to Prickly Bay Grenada with some good speeds. We had to slow down so we didn’t arrive in the dark. This was in part to an extra strong current that we thought would be against us but was with us for some of the night. We arrived on a Saturday and anchored with a lot of boats. This was probably the most number of boats that we have ever shared an anchorage with since Mexico. Most of the southern bays of Grenada were filled with yachts so it was difficult to find good spot, but we managed. We went ashore, deciding to wait to check in till we found an ATM. We went ashore at Spice Island Marina and a local bus just happened to be waiting. He offered us ride into town and when we explained we had neither US dollars nor local Eastern Caribbean Dollars, he took us anyway and dropped us off in St Georges (main town) outside an ATM. He didn’t even wait for us to get some money. He was incredibly generous to us. Now we keep an eye out for his bus so we can reimburse him. We found an ATM, got some local EC currency and bought a local SIM card for the phone. It was the cheapest way for us to access Internet at this time. We also had a quick look around the town center. It is a small island town; some built in the 1750’s, some built in latter years. Some buildings were still in the process of rebuild since Hurricane Ivan in 2004. Some buildings have been rebuilt. It is all quite an eclectic mix of narrow streets and alleyways built over a hill or two. The Caranage is a bustling, active waterfront of local fishing boats and waterfront businesses. We found a bus to get us back then made our way to Prickly Bay Marina in time for happy hour, including ½ price pizza night and free wifi at the Tiki Bar. All in all a great first day in Grenada. There are certainly many services round here for yachts, and plenty of places to socialize at happy hour. It was an easy place to get stuck in so we decided to try and move on before the end of a week. We were spending time with Infini as four heads are better than one when figuring out how to get gas, diesel, get parts, laundry, etc. There is a very helpful cruiser net on the VHF daily so that made some things easier.
