St John, Antigua

The square at Redcliffe Quay
We spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around St John, once again inundated with touts that wanted to offer us an island tour. All because the cruise ships were in. It is amazing the effect a cruise ship has on the local waterfront. This one was once again done up to look nice and the stores were a reflection of what any American European mall may offer. Still, St John did offer an amazing insight into what was the slave trade. Redcliff Quay, where slaves were bought and sold. It was resurrected from the 1700’s and was a rendition of history that we have learnt about as we have travelled along the islands that have historically traded in slaves. The trading houses, the old stores are now selling duty free jewels and trinkets for tourists . The trading square where slaves were shackled, is now a courtyard for several cafes that sell lunch and afternoon coffees or rum punch if it is later in the afternoon.
