Martinique to Bonaire
06 December 2016
No fear, someone is watching us.
We started out in light airs and enjoyed a great spinnaker run, until we saw little holes in the spinnaker. They did progress in size and we realized that the spinnaker was coming up to its end of life. We pulled it down and eventually alternated between sailing and wallowing. We also noticed a rip and delamination in part of the genoa and realized that it too was at its end of life. This was disappointing as we had been lead to believe by Doyles in New Zealand (the sail manufacturer) that we were purchasing sails that would take us around the world. It was the icing on the cake of a myriad of issues we had from them from them since ordering the sails. But not to be. We did put some patches in it to get us at least to Panama, we hope. So it was a conservative trip between sails and motor to get to Bonaire. We did attract the attention of an aircraft 2 days in a row, where the same aircraft overflew us. Thank goodness they got close enough for us to wave to, and for them to wave back at us. I was too busy waving to get a decent photo. We waited for them on the 3rd day but they did not turn up. I guess they decided we were of no interest to them anymore. We are cognizant of being in an area that has its fare share of illegal activity going on and our aim was to stay as far away as possible from it. But we made it to Bonaire in reasonable time, after 4 days and 4 nights. I must say, having a Dave on board made the watch schedule infinitely better.
