Lost City Day 3
09 January 2017
Day 3 saw us up yet again early. 20 minutes, 1 river crossing, then 1200 steps and we were there. The steps were from many hundreds of years ago and a few landslides so were in varying state of repair. They were obviously made by people with small feet, as it was difficult to climb them with any ease. It was also damp and the steps were slippery so 1200 steps was arduous, plus we were starting to wane after 2 days on a grueling trail. But once we got to the top it was all worth it. The Lost City used to be around 220 homes that they have discovered so far. Archeologists have done some restoration work and the local Indians help maintain the area they still use some of the site for ceremonial purposes. The Mamon (head man) for the Kogui lives up here and he entertains fellow Kogui often as he is the one that knows it all and many come to him for advice and knowledge. He did give us the opportunity to ask him questions and it lead to a very interesting conversation about him and his family and how he passes on his knowledge. We spent the entire morning wandering around this site that stretches 4 km up the hill and through the forest. Our guide would stop at places and give us some insight to the history of the Kogui, their way of life, and why they abandoned the city. We negotiated the steps down to the last camp for lunch then it was a walk back to our last camp. We walked 7 km in the afternoon which including a grueling up hill, following a ridgeline down then a knee aching downhill. Our camp for the night did not have any electricity so it was bedtime just after sundown. Most of us were more than ready for it.
