Meganissi
21 September 2016
A small village up the hill is a great morning's walk. Spartachorie. Built on the hill overlooking our bay, with narrow winding streets and white washed buildings. Very cute. Many of the local vehicles are testament to the narrow roads and tight corners. Got to love the sense of humour of the Greeks. As one particularly crappy ute goes past (no panel undented, 3 big windscreen cracks reducing visibility and no rear window) we are all having a giggle, but they return our smiles as Dave gives them the cheeky thumbs up!
I have to go back to the chap in the souveneir shop for some matching crockery (I have a bowl and a small olive oil jug, now a wine jug). Add 2 tea towels and he insists on throwing in a souvlaki spice mix and cigarette lighter.
We go upstairs to his café/taverna for a drink and some brunch, and have a big laugh as he climbs the steps up carrying a large armful of stuff up to the restaurant - he's a bit plump and has worked up quite a sweat. I mime that he could use a pully, so he pats his tummy and indicates he needs the exercise, smiling.
At the end of this he is so delighted to have our trade he gives us a bottle of white wine to take home. We'll be back.
Seeing we have extra hands on board, it's time to try the line ashore anchoring method. Meganissi has an indented coastline with 3 big bays where this is the technique of choice. Let's give it a go! It's not a bad effort, but not great. We should have dropped the anchor further out. That would have given us more chain out and allowed us to be a bit further from the shore. Lovely clear water for a swim though, and very pleasant anchorage - if you forget the wanker taking his mate water skiing behind his RIB. Our last dinner together as TJ and Lou leave tomorrow afternoon, so we head ashore where there are two tavernas. We go to Milas as it looks more salubrious. Nice ambience in the bar, but then the dinner tables are set back towards the kitchen, not towards the view. Entrees are great, but the mains not the best, so a mixed bunch. You get very used to having great food here, so something that is only good can be disappointing.
A storm passes through overnight, not too close. But I do an anxious hour on anchor watch (at 3am!) in case we are suddenly hit by the thunderstorm's lightening or winds. We aren't, thankfully.
Dave sleeps soundly. Bastard!!!
