From Cabo to Bahia Santa Maria

I left Cabo San Lucas on March 3rd., at 8:30 in the morning, with the tanks full and the 100% jib ready for the bash. I rounded Cabo Falso to find only three to five knots of wind. This area can be one of the windiest places on the trip so I wasn't too disappointed. I used the motor all day and began sailing around 8:00 p.m.. By midnight the wind had shifted too far off the course and I decided to use the motor to stay on course. As the wind shifted it increased in speed (15-18 kts.) and the going got a little rough. This also effects boat speed. At times I was only doing 2.5 knots. I think I was going up and down faster than I was going forward. All things come to and end and by 2:00 p.m. I was sailing again and not too far off course. Solitude sails much better than she motors. I look forward to the peace and quite and the smoothness with which she moves through the water when she is sailing. I arrived at Bahia Santa Maria around 4:30 in the afternoon and was greeted at the entrance by three gray whales also heading north. These were the first gray whales I have encountered on the trip. Just another sign that I'm headed north.
