Soup Updates

20 August 2014
Pacific Cup Friends - since back oneline with connectivity, most of our updates have been via Facebook at FreeBowlofSoup.com. Great to see everyone safely making it back. Soup made it back via Freighter, then back up to Portland via I-5. After learning how to replace the rudder bearings, splashed and was ready for Oregon Food Bank Free Bowl of Soup Night this last weekend. The support and visibility from the race has been great, and we've already surpassed our best year ever after our event on Saturday. What a summer, thanks, and looking forward to more adventures together!

Safe travels Sweet Okole

22 July 2014
Soup is looking forward to hearing you're safely in under emergency rudder, looks like you're moving along well, props to Valis for helping out. Looking forward to sharing a Mai Tai and hearing the whole story, and comparing experiences on the rest of the race.

Finished!!!

21 July 2014 | 21 25'N:157 46'W, Kanehoe Yacht Club
What a run, finished at 1:35 PST, 10:35 Hawaii time. Families, Mai Tais, Pineapple, and racers all enjoying the hospitality of KYC. Looks like Sweet Okolue may have had rudder issues, best of luck to them making it in. What a great race, and group we were in. Donig some family and decompress time. Cheers!!!

Just over 200 miles to the line

20 July 2014 | 23 19'N:154 33'W, Soup in the Pacific
OK breeze yesterday with lots of sun, but what a fun, crazy, and tiring night of 17-25 knots, mostly around 20. Odd wave patterns, dark, and some lightning in the distance made for quite the ride. Just shy of a 200 mile day, with a bunch of it last night. Highlight yesterday was Keth catching a Mahi Mahi and us having fish tacos wtih rice in cabbage wraps, yum! That lifted everyone's spirits, and our bodies appreciated the better diet. We made a bit of ground on Sweet Okole in first, but looks like we may be running out of runway to catch them. Not giving up though, still sailing fast. Looking forward to a Mai Tai and seeing the families/friends in Kanahoe tomorrow if all stays per plan. Hopeful we might have raised a bit of $ for Oregon Food Bank at http://freebowlofsoup.org as well, and hope to see folks August 16th for OFB Soup Night!

Under 500 miles

19 July 2014 | 25 46'N:151 12'W, Soup in the Pacific
or 2.5 Oregon Offshores... A bit lighter breeze at times the last 24 hours than we've had in the past, but still solid progress with 179 miles made good towards the finish line. We'll know how it stands up at 9:30am roll call today, quite the horse race based on boat speed to the finish as we're on similar paths in as the fleet, with the leader Sweet Okelue coming in a bit more from the West.

Line in is shaping up

19 July 2014 | Soup in the Pacific
Good breeze this morning, great breeze tonight and a spectacular sunset. Less than 600 miles to go. Need to get through a potential low wind area tomorrow. Two Mahi-Mahi on the hook, one lost bringing it on the boat, one lost a bit before gettnig to the boat. Mt. House freeze-dried dinners are good, but hoping for some fresh fish before here and the finish.
