Entering the harbor of Suva we were struck by the smell of diesel. This is definitely a large working port with a number of large ships, some wrecked, some anchored, and some in at the docks.
There were no moorings or slips available at the Royal Suva Yacht Club, so we anchored out and dinghied ashore. The Yacht Club was reasonably nice and had a guitarist and cosinger who were quite good.
We spent several days exploring town. The Grand Pacific Hotel was the highlight. This refurbished and quite elegant hotel was beautiful and had an excellent restaurant.
Across the street were several large sport fields for cricket and rugby. A cricket match was in progress.
Nearby was the Fiji Museum which was small but quite interesting. I bicycled back and forth about five miles along the waterfront which had a convenient bike path that I could follow through a number of nicely maintained gardens and parks. But the odor of diesel still permeated everything....
