We were still hopeful that we could do some SCUBA diving on this excursion through Fiji. So our next stop was Beqa Island where there were also reported to be some nice schools of large sharks. We anchored off the Beqa Lagoon Resort but soon learned that all the shark dive boats were full for the next week because of a large group of Chinese divers who had just arrived.... So Phil and I dinghied out to one of the intermediate reefs and were able to do one SCUBA dive. With effort I was able to get both ears to equalize to where I could get down to the bottom, which was only 30 feet deep. But the coral had some nice color and there were some unusual color variations to the reef fish were were used to seeing.
One of the more interesting things we saw here were the native villagers fishing at night. The water is quite shallow out to several hundred yards at low tide. At dusk the villagers would wade out into the water and fish with either nets or hand lines. It was quite picturesque with a beautiful sunset.
