Narrative and photo account of our sailing experiences on Southern Cross

Pacific Harbor and the Pearl Resort

It was a quick one hour motor back across to Pacific Harbor on Viti Levu. The harbor entrance was shallow so we had to cross it at high tide with one foot to spare below the keel. We easily picked up our slip and spent the next few days lazing around the hotel. It was rather large, with several conference centers, and was more commercial than Fijian in style, but was quite comfortable with a good restaurant.

In the entryway it had a frightening large metallic statue of a bird of prey clutching a pearl in one talon. It was explained to us that the hotel was owned by a conglomerate from of all places Papua New Guinea, and that the hawk was the national bird for PNG, snatching a pearl from Fiji....

It rained the few days we stayed here, so we mostly stayed in the boat and read.
