Good morning,

Sorry, it has been years since we have reported our whereabouts. As I am sure you remembers, in the early 2000, Joanne & I were trailer-sailing our small sailboat, a Shark 24 named "LoneShark", from Montreal to the North Channel each summer for 3 weeks of fast cruising amongst clouds of hungry mosquito and a few quiet cruisers. Launching with the help of Mathy and Bruce at Killarney Marine Rigging was only one of the many highlights of our time spent in this wild, remote but fantastic area. We liked it so much that we are guilty of convincing my father Jacques to bring his sailboat and his girl friend Marie in these waters for their pleasure (and we hope yours as well ?).

The only thing that could take us away from this wonderful area was our dream of sailing around the world. Inevitably, in 2009 we sold all of our belongings, bought a bigger boat and left to discover a small part of the world we live in. Leaving the turmoil of modern society behind us, we never looked back. Bliss with innocence and filled with the courage of our convictions, we have set our sails the 30th of September heading south for what is still today, a great adventure. Our path took us from Montreal to Lake Champlain, New York (via the Hudson River), then Florida mostly through the Inter-Coastal-Waterway. Then bravely across the infamous Gulf Stream to the the Bahamas and thereafter to Puerto Rico and the Caribbean Islands for the winter.

Seduced by our new lifestyle, we have been heading slowly West ever since: Venezuela; Columbia; Panama and inevitably up and down through the locks of the Canal to the great expense of the Pacific Ocean.
The South Pacific has changed us so much that we have lost sight of our return date to our beloved homeland in Canada. The Galapagos, Marquees, Tuamotu, Tahiti, Bora-bora, Tonga, Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and New Zealand are now part of who we are. Its peoples and cultures are so different that we have not yet found the words to encapsulate the essence of our experiences there.

Carried by the South Equatorial current we ended up running out of Pacific Ocean in Australia early in 2016. With both hands we then pulled hard on the tiller and once again headed south... thus pealing away from the Coconut Milk Run and off of the beaten track. The great East Australian Current carried us swiftly to the "end of the world" where the Pacific Ocean meets with the Indian Ocean into the boisterous "Roaring 40's" of the Great Southern Ocean.

Tasmania has been a safe harbor for us and our beloved Yacht Spirare for the last 18 months. While all of you fellow cruisers in the Northern Hemisphere are enjoying the best of the summer, down under we are peacefully living through our second Tasmanian winter. This morning, Mont Wellington rising majestically behind Hobart is covered with a thick blanket snow to our great delight. We have yet to climb it to make a snow man and leave behind, a proper Inukshuk with its arm pointing back cross the globe to our friends and family back home via the great circle route.

Obliviously I have gotten carried away... my intentions was simply to saying "HI" to all of you up there with a special "Good morning" to my inspiring father Jacques and Marie aboard their sailboat "Doux Amer". We wish you all a great summer in this world renowned fresh water cruising ground.

Cheers to all.

Serge & Joanne living aboard SPIRARE
