The three boats left Figueira around 8.00am on Thursday in convoy for the 35 miles to Nazare. As is normal for the mornings here, the wind was light and we all set the motors going and set a watch for pots! It was a first for us to be 'sailing in company' which was pleasant as previously we had hardly seen another vessel other than fishing boats. By 1pm we were mooring up in Nazare. We had called ahead the previous day to book a space in the Naval Club de Nazare a private yacht club. There is another marina in the same port but we had read that this was a much longer walk to town and the club was cheaper. The lady spoke enough English for us to book berths and was there to greet us on arrival. Unfortunately Klaas and Carla couldn't berth as their depth was too great for the space available so they went across to the other marina. It's worth calling the Naval Club, it is 20 minutes closer to town and it cost E25 per night for us, they only have a few berths but are friendly and try to fit you in. The facilties are basic but the shelter is fine with just the occasional swell from the passing fishing boats.
Thursday evening drinks were on board Joshuas Wake which, as usual, whiled away the evening with a lot of beer, wine and laughter.
Today we walked along the seafront and took the funicular up to the old town of Sitio on the cliff above Nazare. This is where the largest wave ever surfed was achieved in 2013 (you can see shots on the internet). This is a must do trip, the views are spectacular and the old buildings are interesting. Go earlier in the day as by lunch-time the tourist coaches are swarming. We had a coffee overlooking the beach below with the marina in the distance and then explored the streets, the main square, the very ornate church and the outside of the closed Bull Ring. Lunch was fish and prawn kebabs in the Arimar Restaurant (on the road out of the far left corner of the square as you come from the funicular). This place has impressive views over the bay and the food was good if not great. After lunch we walked further down the road to the lighthouse which features in the 'massive wave' video.
We found a small supermarket on the way back to buy salad for a light meal tonight and a few bottles of red wine as we are running out for some reason! Tomorrow will be a 'tidy up and wash the boat' day and we need to decide our next steps. We are due in Peniche a week tomorrow for Alan to join the crew but that's only 30 odd miles down the coast and we don't want to be early as we have heard poor reports of serious fishing boat wash in the harbour. More research needed on that one!
