Cala’s: Vadella/Salada/Grassio

01 May 2016 | Cala Grassio
C&C
We enjoyed the stay in Vadella, on Tuesday we dinghied ashore and walked up the headland to take photos. In the evening Chris got a ‘shore pass’ to take the dinghy to a beach restaurant where football (Man City v Barcelona) was showing. 0-0 but a good game.
On Wednesday we did the 2 hour sail to Cala Salada. Would you believe it, the hopeless French boat came in after us. He almost managed to hit another boat when anchoring the first time then retreated to the other side of the bay. We didn’t actually like the look of the Cala, mostly uninteresting dirty orange rock cliffs and the holding was poor with lots of weed so, given added Frenchman, we decided to move on to our alternative – Cala Grassio, the next bay. This proved to be lovely. It is very small with two beaches separated by a small headland. We were the only boat there and with the forecast being for very little wind we spent a while setting the main anchor out and then, using the dinghy, taking lines ashore to secure us in place so as not to swing on our anchor. A French boat anchored further out and we had a chat to him when we went ashore to wander around. There was a restaurant on the beach but it was too early in the season, they were closed. Chris went in for the first swim of the season, 20 degrees is fine once you’re in! We had a very peaceful night but the wind was due to change during the following day so we had to move on. A recommended stop in the right conditions!
Our target was Cala Binarris, it sounded good in the pilot book but again was mostly rock cliffs and wind swirling us around. When the swell stared to work in at 15.30 hrs Chris decided he wasn’t happy so we set of for Cala San Vincente which looked to be better, tucked in from the north easterly wind and swell. It was bumpy couple of hours motor into the wind and though more attractive, the anchorage was also subject to quite a lot of swell. As a catamaran we don’t roll as badly as mono-hulls and it was too late to change again so we put up with it. Luckily the swell declined after midnight and it was reasonably comfortable. Probably quite a nice bay when the wind is from the west. Lesson of the day was that even though the bay looks tucked away from the swell direction, swell will get round the headland to bug you!

Photo: Splice at anchor in Cala Grassio. We have two reels of ‘Ankrolina’ (strong tape rolled onto reels) which we can roll out and use tie to the shore. This was its first use and we were pleased with the set up. You can just see one of them to the left of the boat in the shot.
