The winds were light on the next afternoon as we headed back towards Corfu town and from behind the beam... time for a first test of the new spinnaker. We hoisted to starboard at first then dropped and reset to test things out, it all seemed to work and we were making 3.5 knots in 5/6knots of wind so the skipper was happy with that. We were able to hold that gybe for most of the trip back until the wind shifted and we had to drop and re-hoist on port. We did have a few pauses to reset lines that seemed to have got themselves in the wrong place but the sail works well... it’s the crew that need the practise.
The next morning we made an early start and by 08.00 had left Fid locked to some steps at the western end of the bay of Garitas. Carolyn’s phone sat-nav, navmii showed a Lidl around 18 minutes walk away so we couldn’t miss that opportunity, could we! It was a reasonable walk though as the day got hot quickly but by 09.30 we were back aboard Splice with a trolley full of supplies and relaxed for a hour until Mitch’s flight arrived and he hopped on a bus to meet us at Naok Marina.
Dinner at Salto's, Corfu Town
That evening the three of us dinghyed into town and after a beer in a cafe with a very chatty waiter we ate at Salto’s, a bistro style eatery recommended by Catherine and Philippe. It’s by the old port or ‘Port qui Pue’ in their terms (pronounced ‘pork-y-poo’ -the port that smells) and it does as there’s a sewage outlet into it. Luckily the wind was offshore that night. The food was very good and we enjoyed sitting outside in the evening sunshine, the bill was more than most Greek establishments but, given the quality was value for money. The evening finished at the ‘Bristol Cafe’ (Mitch lives in Bristol UK so we had to visit) for a first try of Greek Metaxa (Brandy) which rounded off the evening very well.
